Square shape coaster and pen holder - free crochet pattern

 

I crocheted this with twisted yarn and 5mm crochet hook.

Abbreviations:
Sc = Single crochet
Ch = Chain
Sl = Slip stitch

Inc = increase

Dec = decrease
Tc = Triple crochet
Dc = Double crochet
Inc tc = 2 triple crochet in same stitch
Inc dc = 2 double crochet in same stitch
Hdc= half double crochet
Dec hdc= half double crochet 2 stitches together
Inc hdc= 2 half double crochet in same stitch  

Here's the basic:

R1: magic ring, 4 sts

R2: 1sc, inc (x3), sl into 1st to join round, ch1, total 8 sts

R3: 3sc into 1 st, ( 1sc, 3sc into 1 st) x3, sl into 1st to join roundl, ch1, total 16 sts

R4: 2sc, 3sc into 1 loop, ( 3sc, 3sc into 1 loop) x3, sl into 1st to join round, ch1, total 24 sts

R5: 4sc, 3sc into 1 loop, ( 5sc, 3sc into 1 loop) x3, sl into 1st to join round, ch1, total 32 sts

R6: 6sc, 3sc into 1 loop, ( 7sc, 3sc into 1 loop) x3, sl into 1st to join round, ch1, total 40 sts

R7: 8sc, 3sc into 1 loop, ( 9sc, 3sc into 1 loop) x3, sl into 1st to join round, ch1, total 48 sts

R8: 10sc, 3sc into 1 loop, ( 11sc, 3sc into 1 loop) x3, sl into 1st to join round, ch1, total 56 sts

R9,10: sc around, 56 sts. ( fasten off)

Continue and you can make a pen holder. Join rounds to get a perfect shape.
